Nail correction (orthonyxia)

Orthonyxia is the gradual correction of nail shape using small braces placed on the nail plate. The brace applies a gentle, continuous force that lifts the edges of the nail as it grows.

How it works

The brace is fitted without cutting and without anaesthesia. Depending on the shape and thickness of the nail, we use either a fine wire brace shaped to the nail or an elastic composite strip bonded to its surface. The brace is checked and adjusted at set intervals.

Possible benefits

  • 01Reduces pressure of the nail edge on the skin
  • 02May ease pain while walking
  • 03Helps the nail grow in a flatter shape
  • 04In suitable cases, may reduce the need for surgery
04

Limitations

  • 01Correction takes months, because it follows the growth of the nail
  • 02The nail may return to its previous shape, especially if the causes remain
  • 03It is not fitted over acute inflammation or untreated infection
  • 04Very thin, broken or severely fungal nails may not be suitable
05

Who may be suitable

People with strongly curved nails, nails that keep growing into the skin, or those who want a conservative option before considering surgery. Suitability is decided only after an assessment.

06

During correction

  • 01Wear shoes with enough room for the toes
  • 02Do not remove or adjust the brace yourself
  • 03Keep to the planned check-ups
